I must say, this was one of the best journeys my wife and I have ever been on. I would highly recommend Willem for any of your trips as his insight, historical context, intellectual curiosity and thorough knowledge of Iraq's immense civilizations was superb. Our Iraqi guides Saif and Haider were always accommodating and willing to make changes to the itinerary when necessary. Saif was extremely hard working and was a pleasure to be with, as he continually shared Iraqi culture with us as well as what it is like to live in the post-war Iraq. Spiekermann Travel added greatly through their organizational skills and follow through. As for some suggestions on how to make the trip even better than it was, I would attempt to find a better hotel in Baghdad. The Noor Land was marginal at best. At the least, the hotel needs a deep cleaning, especially in the bathrooms. Also, five days in Baghdad was a bit much. I would recommend 2 or three days maximum, as all of the sites we visited could be completed in three days with some pre-planning. I would also recommend that you organize this trip once again. Visiting 22 sites with a focus on archaeology was outstanding and, I believe, a bit more substantive than the other trip Spiekerman organized at the same time as ours. I realize Iraq is not on everyone's bucket list, but my wife and I are now advocates for trips to this historical and extremely friendly country. My primary interest for this trip was photography, as I am just finishing a new book, published by George F. Thompson Publications, titled UNFORGOTTEN: ANCIENT CITIES FROM A DISTANT PAST. Including Mesopotamia was very important and I am happy that this trip happened when it did, as the publication date is March 2025. This will be my fifth book in six years and the last four have received 48 major international awards. I would be happy to provide you with a copy once published and , if I may ask, perhaps the book could be reviewed or advertised on your website. Just a thought! Once again, thanks for organizing the Iraq trip and I hope we can join you on another trip in the near future.
I had a great time, I particularly enjoyed what Saif did for us. He was imaginative, inventive, well experienced, had a great sense of humour, and was able to deal with selfish and cranky input from some of the others. I was amazed how Saif got us into sites that were supposed to be close to the public. We're all very grateful for that. I am actually a best-selling author, and have read thousands of books, dozens on ancient Sumer and Babylonia and Syria and Iran. It taught me a lot about the whole world, and how it operates. I have always really enjoyed understanding the big picture, and this trip was great to do that.. Thanks for just doing the trip at all, most people wouldn't, and I certainly appreciate that.
Rahul seemed genuinely interested in helping me with the trip. I had several questions he assisted with. All the resources sent were useful. Ralph Ellis was informative and entertaining. All the guides seemed friendly, knowledgeable, and had information to share. I appreciated seeing all the sites including the tomb of Rumi which was added. While my primary interest was to visit Göbekli Tepe, I enjoyed the time at Karahan Tepe more as we had the site to ourselves. The Dervishes show was amazing. Overall, an excellent trip.
Ancient Origins provides an excellent opportunity to see the ancient sites of the world. The quality of educational information and adventure exceeds most other travel organizations. Smart people will pick Ancient Origins.
Amazing trip: Love travel! Really enjoyed meeting you ah! Thank you fabulous trip!
Having a smalller group made the whole experience more personal and enjoyable. Dr Alistair Coombs and Ralph were two of the highlights! and Rahul, it would have been great to have Rahul for the entire trip! Thank you for this wonderful adventure!
